Prof. Esther Buregyeya

Prof. Esther Buregyeya is a Medical Physician and Public Health Scientist at the School of Public Health with a strong background in field research for over 15-20 years of experience in designing and implementing community and facility-based research, mainly in HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, mHealth and AMR, and longitudinal research including CTs. She is a One Health Champion and member of the AMR National Task Force and One Health Platform, and a PI on several AMR grants including; the Fleming Fund Country Grant I on institutionalization of AMR surveillance, and antimicrobial stewardship in Uganda; Using a behavioural approach to design an antimicrobial stewardship intervention in healthcare facilities in Kampala, Mukono and Luwero Districts, Uganda funded by Pfizer; Strengthening antimicrobial stewardship through a nurse-led program in Mukono District Hospital, Uganda, funded by THET.

Esther is leading the evaluation of the project objectives to address public health needs of Uganda using the identified project indicators, as well as support mentoring, training and skilling of the various health stakeholders about the intervention.

An integrated digital system for antimicrobial resistance data capture, processing, and sharing — currently under active development by our research team.
