Makerere University

Mr. Africano Byamugisha is a Data Engineer and MIS Architect with expertise in designing and adoption of data systems for low resource settings, data integration, and applied AI/Machine Learning. He holds a MSc. Computer Science (Data Science & AI major) from Makerere University, where his research focused on domain adaptation of automatic speech recognition for mental health in Luganda, and a Bachelor of Statistics (Statistical Computing major). His research work spans designing management information systems, real time monitoring frameworks, and end to end data operations and strategy, including supporting IFC’s mobile money expansion programs in South Sudan, DRC, and Uganda. He has experience building NLP-powered data classification systems and has published on PII detection in low resource languages, NLP-based alignment of research to national development objectives, and international research collaboration dynamics.

Africano is a PhD research student on this project responsible for the designing, execution and evaluation of digital innovations and AI solutions for fundamental health challenges, particularly those involving infectious diseases, microbiology processes and management and communication of antimicrobial resistance data. He will contribute to designing, developing, implementing the NIAMR platform and building an interoperability layer to connect with all the siloed AMR surveillance systems and GLASS and other Digital Health systems in Uganda’s Health System.
